You have probably heard the phrase: "Greasing the hoof only makes everything worse!" Even farriers sometimes advise against grooming. But what is the reason for this? Is there even any truth in it, when so many people say it? Yes. If you use the wrong products, it can actually make the hooves worse and dry them out. This is because some of them contain mineral oils such as petroleum that seal the surface. They are shiny, extremely cheap and therefore often found in hoof care products (this much in advance: not at leovet of course, our products are all petroleum-free). Mineral Oil, Vaseline, Petrolatum, Paraffinum Liquidum, Paraffinum Subliquidum, Cera Microcristallina, Microcrystalline Wax, Ozokerit - these are all names for mineral oils that you should look out for in the list of ingredients. Mineral oils interfere with the natural hoof mechanism by preventing the exchange of moisture - the hoof can no longer "breathe". Ultimately, this only dries it out even more. In addition, vitamins and other active substances are prevented from being transported into deeper layers. Such care is indeed worse than simply leaving the hoof undisturbed. However, it is better to support the hoof individually according to its needs, to provide it with moisture without sealing it. Would you have known?
